Help your young artist build a strong foundation with our "Drawing for Beginners" class! Tailored for kids ages 8-12, this five-week class meets every Wednesday for one hour and introduces the essential skills needed to start their artistic journey. At this key stage in their development, children refine fine motor skills, enhance observation, and discover creative ways to express themselves—all in a supportive and engaging environment.
Each week focuses on a specific set of skills, building on previous lessons to create a well-rounded understanding of drawing. Students will work with pencil and charcoal, exploring the unique qualities of each medium:
- Week 1: Tools & Foundations – Get to know different drawing tools, including pencils and charcoal, and practice basic shapes, lines, and strokes to create strong foundational skills.
- Week 2: Shading & Texture – Experiment with light and shadow to add depth, and explore techniques for creating texture using pencils and charcoal.
- Week 3: Proportions – Learn how to size and position objects and figures accurately, focusing on proportion and balance.
- Week 4: Perspective Drawing – Discover the basics of perspective to create a sense of space and depth in drawings, including one-point and two-point perspective techniques.
- Week 5: Drawing from Observation – Practice observing and sketching real-life objects, focusing on translating what you see onto paper with accuracy and detail.
This thoughtfully designed course provides age-appropriate instruction that balances skill-building with creativity and fun. By the end of the five weeks, students will have the confidence and skills to take their art to the next level.
All materials are provided, but individual kits are available as an optional add-on at checkout. These kits include a personal sketchbook, pencils, charcoal, and essential tools for your artist to keep and continue practicing at home. If you’d like your artist to have their own kit, simply select this option below. Otherwise, just bring your enthusiasm and imagination!
Age Suggestion: early elementary, e.g., 8-12 years old
Materials Needed: All art supplies will be provided. Children are encouraged to bring any tools or supplies from home to learn how to use.
Notes:
This is a drop-off program. Artists can be dropped off up to 5 minutes before class begins and should be picked up within 5 minutes after class is over. Late fees will be charged to habitually late arrivals.
