The Science of Art: A Teen Art Class Exploring Science Through Creativity

Unleash your creativity while exploring the fascinating intersection of science and art! In this hands-on, 1.5 hour-long weekly class, students will dive into scientific principles and bring them to life through art. Each week features a different scientific concept with fun, engaging projects designed to spark curiosity and inspire creative expression. This class encourages the E in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), highlighting how science and art go hand in hand to fuel innovation and creativity.

Course Overview:

  • Week 1: The Science of Crystals (Part 1) – Learn how crystals grow and create your own crystal-growing experiment! Observe and sketch shapes and fragments.
  • Week 2: The Science of Crystals (Part 2) – Explore the geometric shapes of crystals and create beautiful crystallized artwork with chalk pastels and watercolors.
  • Week 3: Sound Waves and Art – Discover how sound waves create visual patterns and experiment with sound frequencies to make art using paint, sand, and vibrations.
  • Week 4: Biomimicry – Study patterns in nature and use mixed media to create artwork inspired by the structures and designs found in the natural world.
  • Week 5: Physics of Movement – Learn how movement influences art, and create stunning abstract paintings by building pendulums for paint pouring.
  • Week 6: Cyanotypes – Explore the basics of photography and chemistry by creating cyanotype prints using light-sensitive paper and natural objects.
  • Week 7: The Science of Pigments (Part 1) – Learn how pigments are made and experiment with creating your own colors from natural materials like berries, charcoal, and spices.
  • Week 8: The Science of Pigments (Part 2) – Use the pigments you’ve created to design vibrant, one-of-a-kind artwork.
  • Week 9: Chemical Reactions in Art – Explore how chemical reactions can create unique artistic effects, such as using baking soda and vinegar to create fizzy paint or combining materials to create unexpected textures.
  • Week 10: Nature and Anatomy in Art – Discover the surprising visual similarities between items in nature and human anatomy. Use observational drawing to connect organic and anatomical forms in a creative piece.

In this class, students will see how scientific concepts can inspire unique art and how art can be used to illustrate scientific ideas. Perfect for teens interested in blending creativity with science, and exploring how these fields complement each other in the world of STEAM.
